Where do we start?
When a session is booked, I offer a free consultation. This meeting is to get to know one another and to discuss your portrait goals. We can meet by phone or in person to review all of your options for your session.
Where do you take the pictures? Will I have enough studio time?
All images are currently photographed on location, either at my client's home or a location of their choosing. Each standard session lasts up to 1 hour, with newborn sessions lasting up to 2 hours. This will allow you enough time for an outfit change and snack time for little ones if necessary.
Who owns the rights to the images?
Marcia Russell Photography retains all the rights to the images. Your images are kept on file for easy re-ordering.
What kind of clothing works best?
For groups, neutrals, similar shades or opposites on the color wheel look best, try to avoid overly busy patterns and large accessories. Individual sessions will allow for the most self-expression through wardrobe. Have a look at our What to Wear pinterest board for more ideas.
When is the best time to have maternity portraits taken?
This is truly a personal decision as it depends on how comfortable you are in your pregnancy. The ideal time is around 32 weeks when your belly is nicely rounded and you aren't too uncomfortable. I have done maternity sessions right up to the day of birth.
When should newborn portraits be taken?
The best time for newborn portraits to be taken is within the first two weeks. Your baby will sleep a lot and it is easiest to create the artsy poses at this time. If you want your baby's eyes to be open, try waiting until they are 3-4 weeks or older.
My child is very shy. How will you handle that?
I like to take our time to build up trust with your child. It is very important that you not place any extra pressure on your child by telling them that they have to smile and perform. The most important thing to remember is that your child's personality is your child's personality. More reserved children are not as likely to give over-the-top expressions and outgoing children are not as likely to give contemplative expressions on command. Feel free to include a favorite toy or blanket to make them feel more at ease.
What if my child is sick?
If your child is sick, your appointment will be rescheduled. Children who are feeling under the weather don't photograph well and I want your session to be memorable for all the right reasons.
Do you photograph pets?
At this time, only service animals will be photographed.
• relax and be yourself
• have fun during your session
• remove nail polish for newborn portraits, touch up any chips for all other sessions
• avoid overly shimmery make-up, a little bit is better than a lot
• if doing maternity or boudoir portraits avoid restrictive clothing for about two hours before your session
• be sure to have healthy snacks and books or toys on hand to keep little ones happy during individual or couple shots
